DIVADLO NA ZÁBRADLÍ

The Theatre Na zábradlí was founded in 1958 and its founders – Helena Philippová, Ivan Vyskočil, Jiří Suchý, Vladimír Vodička – gave its professional theatre a name according to a lane leading from Anenské Square to the riverbank. They presented a theatre pop-up picture book performance full of songs Kdyby tisíc klarinetů as the first performance on 9 December.

At the start of the sixties – with the arrival of stage director Jan Grossman, scenographer Libor Fára, and scene-shifter, later dramatic adviser and playwright Václav Havel – the Theatre Na zábradlí started to develop the Czech features of the Theatre of the Absurd. The theatre has been recognized considerably in this country and also abroad, yet J. Grossman and V. Havel had to leave the theatre in 1968. In the seventies and eighties the Theatre Na zábradlí became a shelter for some film directors of the Czech new wave of the sixties, who were prevented from film work by normalization practice.

In 1989 Jan Grossman came back to the theatre as a stage director and a later manager. In 2003 Ivana Slámová and playwright and stage director Jiří Pokorný replaced the artistic leadership, they try to interlace texts of classical dramatic literature with Czech and world premieres of contemporary dramatic authors of European, Anglo-American as well as Czech provenience.
