Deer Moat

Dear Moat is a natural valey in the complex of the Prague Castle with the size of 8 hectars. The Brusnice River was flowing through the valey, later regulated and put into the piping. It was originaly part of the fortification. The whole area became kingdom property during the time of Emperor Rudolf II. The game was put there and there were even organised huntings. At part of the land there was built the horse riding hall. Prašný most (Powder Bridge) overarched the Deer Moat, connecting the Royal Garden with the rest of the castle. In the era of Maria Theresa the bridge was replaced by earthen dam. Between the world wars during so called First Republic there was the bear-house for the bears given to president Masaryk by the Czechoslovac legionary from the Russian front.
