Respect Festival 2008

Toy Vivo / Israel

Spanish Synagogue
30 June at 8 p.m.

'Respect, the oldest Czech world music festival, served during its 11 year history as a valuable inspiration for related events, and maintains it's strong and pioneering position. The 2008 edition combines established performers with latest trends. The Malian diva Oumou Sangare, a mainstay of West African music for two decades, gives her first Prague concert. Lo Cor de la Plana, an acapella male band from Marseilles, combines ancient songs from Provence with polyphony singing and Berber rhythms. Kasai All Stars revive tribal rituals from the remote regions of Congo, yet unseen in Europe. Tanya Tagaq, known for her work with Kronos Quartet and Björk. transforms the art if Inuit throat singing into adventurous stage form. The LA band Dengue Fever, fronted by the Cambodian female pop star Chhom Nimol, delivers steaming hot rendition of pre-Killing Fields Asian pop influenced by American psychedelia - and the Nigerian singer Asa, a rising pop star with a fragile voice resembling Bob Marley, sings her own English songs, masterfully crafted like precious gems.'

'Qanun, a sophisticated version of the European zither, is the key instrument of Middle East. Avshalom Farjun is a self-taught virtuoso and one of the most respected visionaries of the Israeli music scene.'

The Spanish Synagogue - one of the most beautifull synagogues in Europe, was built in 1868 on the site of the oldest Prague Jewish house of prayer ("the Old Shul"). It was designed in a Moorish style by Vojtěch Ignátz Ullmann. The remarkable interior decoration features a low stucco arabesque of stylized Islamic motifs which are also applied to the walls, doors and galery balustrades. The interior, together with the stained glass windows, were designed by architects A. Baum and B. Munzberg and completed in 1893. František Škroup, the composer of the Czech national anthem, served as organist here in 1836-45. By reopening the Spanish Synagogue - closed for over 20 years - on the 130th anniversary of its establishment, the Jewish Museum in Prague has completed one of its most ambitious projects to date.
